ESTABLISH RELATIONSHIP AMONG ASSETS

In any organization, where fleet are deployed, different types of fleet (such as trucks, loaders, cranes, stackers, dozers, graders etc.) are deployed to work together. All of these groups work together to achieve overall objectives of the process. Each of these assets have specific operation and those operations are performed when other group is performing certain operation. Understanding these individual operations and dependencies of these operations with regard to operations of other fleet groups gives meaningful information to managers. This forms first step towards building an effective fleet management solution. The next step is to identify various fleet groups and establishing relationship among them in operations. Operations of different fleet groups on common time scale helps understand how overall operations performed and hence managers will be able to correlate sequence of operations and analyze processes.

Most of the fleet management solution providers ignore this crucial relationship among the fleet groups and provide data related to individual fleet assets only. Hence, fleet management system does not seem to provide much insight into operations, but primarily limited to maintenance management only.

At MINEMATICS, our primary focus is on operations management. Hence establishing relationship among the fleet groups and interpreting events within each individual fleet vis-à-vis events in other dependent fleet group into specific meaningful operations sequentially is given utmost importance.

UNDERSTANDING FLEET UTILIZATION

For a manager to analyze effective fleet utilization and improve, one wants to reduce unproductive hours of fleet. For that, one has to break down the entire trip (or cycle time) into manageable/understandable states/activities of each trip/cycle.Unless, all cycles and states are determined with time for each individual equipment in the fleet it is difficult to assess effective utilization of the fleet. And this can be achieved only when such states can be determined in relation with other dependent fleet groups.

Often fleet utilization is calculatedas the time of equipment powered ON. Equipment’s idle time is calculated as that when equipment is operational at lower speeds, say < 5kmph.But these assumptions are flawed as often power can be ON even when they are not really utilized and equipment/vehicles can be working at lower speedsalso. Hence, understanding cycles and states with each cycle help interpret fleet activities better and help managers analyze their operations objectively. For one to determine various cycles and states, it is essential to understand customer’s business processes, fleet/groups and how they work together.

FOCUS ON PROCESS NOT ON INDIVIDUAL ASSETS

A process is a set of inter-related activities performed to achieve an objective. When these activities are performed in a sequence and in relation with other dependent resources/resource groups in a coordinated fashion, they achieve operational excellence. In large organizations, often departments/sections are created based on skill or expertise and different departments come together to perform a business process. In the process of achieving excellence at department level, often overall process objectives are overseen. Similar local optimization occurs in case of fleet management too. Individual assets or assets groups are monitored for excellence instead of overall process parameters/KPIs. Hence, there are market solutions providing detailed analytics of an asset instead of processes.Such solutions help managers to ensure assetsare best available for operations, but its utilization can only be dependent how effectively each asset is operating in relation with other asset groups. Here is why a good fleet management should be able to interpret operations also and help managers how well an asset is used and quickly identify bottlenecks. It also enables managers to see through the impact of various fleet operating policies and it’s affect on overall process KPIs.
